Experiment - Irina Dakeva Inspired

The combination of song and visual worked very well with the Breakbot music video.  Once I found another song that suited it I tested out my own visuals that were inspired by Dakeva's and combined it into my rotating lion assignment.

Experiment - Ryan Woodward Inspired

A long time after discovering the Ryan Woodward video, it still resonated in me to attempt his technique of animating, thankfully his work was done in Flash- a medium I have experience with.  Hip-hop/Rap is a genre I very much enjoy so in looking for a song to animate a dance to, that's where I looked.  Talented choreographer, Shaun Evaristo, created a routine in which I tried out an experiment with.

Experiment - Naruto Inspired

In another Naruto Opening Theme, there was a shot of a character being overcome in a whirlwind of sand, trying to escape.  While searching for elements that I wanted for my grad film last Spring, I came across this and it resonated well with what I was aiming to achieve.  It inspired this animation test of a character struggling in the middle of a tornado.

Influence - Naruto Openings

Anime as a genre may or may not fit the experimental mould but there are elements in it that are a removal from western commercial animation.  What appeals to me the most is the exaggeration of the poses because they happen in such a fast-pace and often resolve in large graphic distortions of the body in radically changing dimensions so very often, while having a way of maintaining the model of the character.  This is something I would like to work more on in this class, the last part being my biggest challenge thus far in my learning to be an animator.

This is the 5th opening theme of the series.

The openings of this anime, specifically, appeal to me and seems like a genre I would one day like to pursue.  They function as a music video that tells a story of an entire chapter of a series, often containing elements not yet revealed in the series but just giving an intriguing glimpse.

Influence - Ryan Woodward

Ryan Woodward is an art director and current storyboard artist who has worked for studios such as Sony, Universal, and Disney.  What appeals to me the most is the treatment of character.  He has ample experience in gesture drawing and has taught figure drawing classes at Brigham Young University which is where he refines his style of conte drawing in which he uses a variety of abstract lines to describe the figure without explicit detail.  The great accomplishment here is that he was able to show that in the medium of animation which is commonly known for having qualities like highly defined details, and fully colour-blocked shapes.

In an interview Woodward described the reason he made this by describing a time when he was on a plane coming back home after a work-related trip.  He was listening to this song on his iPod, "The World Spins Madly On", by The Weepies when he came to the realization that he hadn't been spending enough time with his family and it dawned upon him that he wanted to be a better husband and father for his family.  This is a dedication to them.  Something to respect and admire- a conflict that confronts anyone that works in this industry.

Influence - Irina Dakeva

Irina Dakeva is a french animator and art director who worked with a studio in Paris, WIZZdesign, to produce a music video for french pop artist, Breakbot, and their single, "Baby I'm Yours".  The energy she creates from using the medium of watercolour in combination with the upbeat tempo of the dance beat is what resonated with me the most. What I also enjoyed was the fun, love-struck imagery of the video that creatively told a story without grounding it's setting, transitioning from one shot to the next with creative whimsy.

In an interview with Motionographer, she describes how she got to the style and treatment of the video:
"The day me and Breakbot decided to make the video, I was already fed up with the inherently cold digital nature of most contemporary productions. We wanted to achieve something lively, frolic and emotional; something that accentuates the analogue drawing itself rather than the inevitable computerized interpretation and post-processing.  "

Introduction

Here is my blog for Animation 323 at Emily Carr University.  In it I will be posting the experiments I go through in this class that aims to explore different animation mediums, styles, processes and all the recesses I take it to.

The first main post will be a poster- a metaphoric itinerary that will describe how I will go about this course which allows for a large amount of artistic freedom.  Before that I'll begin with a few examples that have inspired me to venture into the territory of experimental animation.  These are examples that aren't necessarily considered commercial, which is what you would usually come across in animated TV shows like The Simpsons or one of the films by Pixar.
